Understanding the Risks of Heat
Great Danes, like many large breeds, are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses due to their size and limited ability to sweat. Overheating can lead to serious health issues such as heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration. I always keep an eye out for signs like excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and collapse. If you notice any of these symptoms, act quickly to cool your dog down and seek veterinary care immediately.
Hydration is Key
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to keep my Great Danes cool is to ensure they stay hydrated. I always provide access to fresh, cool water and encourage them to drink frequently. Adding ice cubes to their water bowl helps keep it cool for longer periods. I also love to bring along a dog-friendly water bottle. This one is my absolute favorite and has withheld many road trips and adventures with my dogs!
Product Spotlight: Dr. Harvey’s Chicken and Garden Veggies
For optimal hydration and nutrition, I add Dr. Harvey’s Chicken & Garden Veggies to my dogs’ diet. This superfood mix is packed with natural ingredients that support overall health and provide essential hydration. Just add water to create a wholesome, refreshing meal that my Great Danes love. I love to especially feed this mix during the summer because it allows me to know that my dogs are getting enough hydration in their food, rather than dry kibble. Additionally, the meal is complete and balanced, and packed with the nutrition they need for swimming, hikes and other high-energy activities we love to do!
Create a Cool Environment
During peak heat hours, typically from 10 AM to 4 PM, I try to keep my dogs indoors where it’s cooler. If your home isn’t air-conditioned, fans can help improve air circulation. I also create a cool resting spot for my Danes with a damp towel or a cooling mat.
Avoid Hot Pavements
Pavement and asphalt can become extremely hot during the summer and can burn your dog’s paws. Before going for a walk, I check the ground temperature by placing my hand on the pavement for a few seconds. If it's too hot for my hand, it’s too hot for their paws. We opt for walks in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
This video is a great illustration from a veterinarian on youtube, of what can happen if your dogs walk on hot pavement!
If your dog likes shoes, you can always opt for doggy shoes. If they do not tolerate shoes very well, you can put something called ‘Mushers Paw’ on their feet. This helps your dogs feet by coating them with a waxy, safe substance that will help to protect them from the hot surface.
Provide Shade
If my Danes spend time outside, I ensure they have access to plenty of shade. Trees, umbrellas, or a shaded doghouse provide much-needed relief from the sun. Remember, a dog can still overheat in the shade if the temperature is high, so keep outdoor time limited during extreme heat.
Frozen Treats for Cool Relief
Just like humans enjoy ice cream in the summer, dogs can benefit from frozen treats. I make simple frozen treats by blending dog-friendly fruits like watermelon or blueberries with water and freezing them in ice cube trays. You can also fill ice-cube trays with something like bone broth for a refreshing and cold treat or make doggy popsicles if you are feeling extra creative!
Product Spotlight: Dr. Harvey’s Sweet Potato Chews
For a tasty and healthy treat that’s perfect for summer, I give my Danes Dr. Harvey’s Sweet Potato Chews. These single-ingredient chews can be frozen for an extra cool snack. They are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients that support my dogs’ overall health.
Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car
Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked car can rise rapidly, leading to life-threatening conditions for your dog. I never leave my Danes unattended in a car, even for a short period.
Cooling Gear
I invested in cooling gear such as cooling vests, bandanas, and mats. These products are designed to help lower my dogs’ body temperature and keep them comfortable during outdoor activities. Out of all of the bandanas that I have found to keep my dogs cool, these ones work the best! All you have to do is drench them in some cold water and wrap them around your dog’s neck!
Swimming for a Cool Summer Activity
Swimming is a fantastic way to keep my Great Danes cool and active during the summer. Not only does it provide excellent exercise, but it also helps regulate their body temperature. I make sure to supervise them at all times and choose safe, dog-friendly swimming spots. If you don't have access to a pool or a natural water source, a kiddie pool filled with cool water can be a fun and refreshing alternative for your dogs to splash around in.
